Wendy King Philips first started out in the fashion industry, with stints at Women’s Wear Daily and W Magazine. She soon realized her love of fashion and style reflected well in interior and furniture design, and her “second act” began. She joined Interlude Home, a fashion-infused, modern home decor brand featuring sleek silhouettes and rich textures.  Today, Wendy travels the globe with her husband and business partner, Carl Philips, in search of materials, techniques, and artisans with who can bring their vision to life. As a Creative Director, foodie, and fashion-lover, Wendy pours her creative energy into each new collection of Interlude pieces to create “fashion inspired living” like you’ve never seen before. Today, Wendy tackles our #5MinutesWith questionnaire and leaves us as inspired as ever:

MY LIGHTBULB MOMENT:
In 2009, I was traveling in India with my now husband and business partner, Carl for the first time. This trip was meant to be for pleasure, but after attending a few design meetings with Carl, I realized that my fashion background and passion for home decor naturally parlayed into interiors and furniture design. And just like that, my second act began.

I CAN’T START MY DAY UNTIL:
A shot of Apple Cider Vinegar (for the amazing detox affects and daily recalibration), followed by something hot, usually coffee with Zen soy milk or hot water with lemon. No matter the season, it must be hot.

I always love a sweet “good morning” from the kids, but that’s rare with teenagers.

SUCCESS IS:
Embracing change and making it work. Bottom line, change is inevitable, so it’s best if you welcome it. Often, your biggest hurdle becomes your greatest success. So I say, “Bring it on!”

YOU’LL NEVER SEE ME WITHOUT:
Nars Turkish Delight Lip Gloss. Ever.

MY DREAM COLLABORATION:
I would love to collaborate with interior designer Alexandra Champalimaud. I am obsessed with her unparalleled taste level, attention to detail, use of color and ability to design in all styles. She’s extraordinary and I truly do not know how she does it all.

THE ONLY PLACE BETTER THAN NEW YORK:
Wow, that’s a tough one. For a place to be better than NYC, it would have to be completely different. A polar opposite. Cambodia, Vietnam and Kyoto are some of my absolute favorites places in the world. They are awe inspiring and overwhelming in their beauty, food and culture.

WHEN I FEEL UNINSPIRED:
I cook. It’s meditative and I am instantly transported away from the stresses of day to day life. I literally think about nothing and focus on the meal in front of me. I live for Heidi Swanson’s unbelievable veggie burger recipe from her blog, 101 Cookbooks. Although she is a vegetarian, I always roast a chicken or poach a salmon to go with them and make a green sauce using avocado as a base. Together, it’s a delicious meal.

ADVICE I WISH I HAD 5 YEARS AGO:
To have confidence that your second act can be even more fulfilling and successful than your first. Life gives you many chapters if you’re lucky, so don’t be afraid to continue writing your story. Just go for it.

IN 5 YEARS FIND ME:
Hopefully, doing the same thing. Traveling and trend spotting, taking risks and being fully immersed in the design industry.

ABOVE ALL ELSE:
Be kind, always.
