Believe it or not, flooring can evoke a strong emotional reaction in people. Perhaps it was your grandmother’s dark cherry floors or your friend’s Scandinavian style ash hardwood planks, we all have our hearts set out on a few styles. It would seem intuitive, but flooring can actually make a huge difference in your space and there are a lot more choices than you can imagine – wide versus narrow, herringbone versus straight, hardwood versus laminate, light, dark and everything in between. Not to mention that we’ve seen a surge in popularity of alternative floor surfaces such as concrete and stone.

When taking the plunge it’s important to think about what overall style you want to go with. Dark (almost black) and bleached wood are the most contemporary options, but they can also feel a little cold. Wide planks will make your space feel larger, but don’t forget to have them face the direction you want to balance out the most. In other words, if you have a long, narrow living room, have them placed horizontally to create the feeling of a wider space.

Another important thing to consider is cost. It’s not always the best choice to go with hardwood flooring – the cost is quite high and you can now find laminates that look just as good for a fraction of the price. They can also be a lot easier to take care of. So before you have made your mind up that a big chunk of your renovation budget will go to gorgeous hardware floors, consider the highest quality laminate flooring possible. You might be surprised with the results.
