A few weeks back we shared our favorite new trade show to visit AmericasMart. The building design, the vast array of showrooms, and Atlanta as a host city are all huge attractive forces behind the event. As insiders in the industry we got word that 7 hugely important designers will be designing vignettes around the newly launched paint tone Portman’s White. We sat down with three of the designers to discuss all things decorating – from this exciting new shade of white (we hear that it will be the go-to paint color for our walls!) to their favorite local spots in Atlanta:

1. NIKI PAPADOPOULOS

How does Portman White stand out for you as a shade?

It is such a true white that it works with any other color or design element, hinting warmer or cooler depending on what it’s paired with without ever looking pink, yellow or green which so many shades of white often do.

What is the inspiration for your vignette?

Mr. Portman’s architecture is so inspiring so that’s where I am taking my cue- modern classic with a nod to the architectural elements he employs in his buildings.

What particular piece from AmericasMart will you build your design around?

I don’t ever conceive designs around one specific item, rather the composition as a whole.

What is it about AmericasMart that makes it stand out from the rest?

It has everything, literally. You can find home items, gift items, fashion items, almost whatever you are looking for including Starbucks!

What is your insider tip for navigating and getting the most out of AmericasMart?

Have a plan, both of what you want to do and a map of the building! There is so much to see and experience it’s best if you try to make a plan and appointments before you come. That way you can maximize your time and not get lost!

What are some tips or hints to keep in mind when designing in an all-or-mostly white palette?

It can be a daunting idea, figuring out how to feature the color “white”, when white is so often the background for other things. I think when designing with white, the thing to consider is what it will do to your other colors; it’s really important to compare them against each other so your “main white” doesn’t end up looking yellow or green or pink.

What are some of your favorite local shops and restaurants to visit when you’re in Atlanta?

The stores I love are Antonio Raimo Galleries,  South of the Market, and Pieces. My favorite restaurants are Athens Pizza,  Barcelona, and West Egg Café.

2. STAN TOPOL

How does Portman White stand out for you as a shade?

Portman White is one of the few whites that gives you a comfortable feeling. It is not a harsh white and it is not one that reflects other colors.  So it will be great for walls, ceilings, and even trim.

What is the inspiration for your vignette?

Mr. Portman, himself.  Understatement with style.

What particular piece from AmericasMart will you build your design around?

There is not one piece that isn’t coming from AmericasMart.  I love to try new showrooms and then move into all the buildings and bring various facets from all over the Mart into my space and still keep it minimal.

What is it about AmericasMart that makes it stand out from the rest?

The AmericasMart Campus offers us the world in one location.

What is your insider tip for navigating and getting the most out of AmericasMart?

The insider tip that always works for me is to be always looking for something new.  While doing that, you never know what else you might run into.  Good training, a good education, and a little bit of luck and you can “rule” the Mart!

How did you get started in the world of interior design?

I was fortunate to have the privilege to work with Billy Baldwin in New York City.

What are some tips or hints to keep in mind when designing in an all-or-mostly white palette?

Always keep the tint consistent in your whites and be careful with how you accent the space with colors

What are some of your favorite local shops and restaurants to visit when you’re in Atlanta?

Shopping is terrific in Atlanta.  I use Francois & Company, Marsden Antiques, and Robuck and Co. for furniture.  Restaurants, there is now a favorite – Atlas at the St. Regis in Buckhead.

Favorite entertaining/design/style tip.

At home, always look for the best floral touches you can add.  They need to feel a part of the environment – not stand out.

3. MICHELLE WORKMAN

How does Portman White stand out for you as a shade?

Portman White is a soft white – it has a warmth to it

What is the inspiration for your vignette?

White with red and blue

What particular piece from AmericasMart will you build your design around?

I started with the idea of a dining vignette so the tabletop from Mottahedeh was my building block

What is it about AmericasMart that makes it stand out from the rest?

It is quite easy to maneuver and has some of the best temporaries around!

What is your insider tip for navigating and getting the most out of AmericasMart?

Make a list and then go floor by floor

How did you get started in the world of interior design?

I wanted to be an artist, but I can’t paint or draw so I thought this was the next best thing.

What are some tips or hints to keep in mind when designing in an all-or-mostly white palette?

Always use multiple shades of a single color and tons of texture – this will help create depth to any monochromatic design

What are some of your favorite local shops and restaurants to visit when you’re in Atlanta?

Bistro Niko is always a favorite

Favorite entertaining/design/style tip.

Don’t do things half way – if you’re going to make a statement go all the way, be fearless to show who you really are.
